UNREST is:
Mark Robinson: guitar, vocals Bridget Cross: bass, vocals Phil Krauth: drums
Comprised of three seemingly disparate co-conspirators, Unrest is
without question the most fascinating group to emerge from the Washington, D.C.
area since The Warren Commission. On lead vocals and guitar is Mark Robinson. An
enigmatic fellow, Mark is like a hunk of Play-Doh, or just a hunky Plato. He is
songwriter, Teenbeat label entrepreneur, brother, son... practically the tear in
the eye of a new father. He's at once the consummate frontman, yet chugs behind
like a caboose. Bassist Bridget Cross has both low and high frequencies covered,
her vocals floating atop the melody like smoke on the water. And Phil Krauth?
Well, despite the perfectly dreadful crimped hair, the pounder of the pagan skins
can hit velvet tones as smooth as a hang-glider. Together, The Unrest Group is
reminiscent of a welcome, dark childhood hangout in the woods.
Mark and Phil
formed the band after playing in various high school combos together. Honing
their now-legendary "who gives a rat's ass?" attitude, they arrived upon the name
Unrest to describe the reaction of Krauth's parents (Rich & Sylvia), and the
moniker stuck like gum under their school desks. Since then, they've been through
a lot, including line-up changes and a gradual change from hard funk/rock to
experimental punk, to the sharply tweaked pop stylings that fill the dance card
on their final offering, Perfect Teeth.
Recorded in just five days under the
watchful eye of producer Simon LeBon, Perfect Teeth is Unrest's tribute to all
things without flaw on our Big Blue Marble, and also, nothing short of private
obsessions gone public. They draw chalk circles around pop culture icons and chew
through 60's la-la pop, the 70's DIY aesthetic, 80's post-punk experimentation,
not to mention the occasional stereo demonstration record. As a result, the LP
runs polar extremes, from "Breather XOXO," the musical equivalent of the Aurora
Borealis, to "Cath Carroll," a C86 influenced rush in which the band goes on a
joy ride with Perfect Teeth's cover star (ex-NME journalist/British
indie-pop-cult-herione Cath Carroll). The best summation of Unrest is to borrow
their own motto: "Take No Prisoners." You are simply defenseless against the
aural assault from these three maestros, pop impresarios one and all. Love them,
as they love you. -- Erin Smith, 1993
