DAYTONA was founded by Chassie Post and Phil Costello, who live together in
the East Village, New York City. Chassie, an Atlanta native and former
contemporary art gallerist, met Phil three years ago when he attended an
opening at her eponymous gallery in SoHo. They immediately entered couples
counseling, sensing the magnitude of their impending union.
Phil is regarded by himself, as well as by several peers, to be an inspiring
and innovative guitarist. He has been a member of several major local New
York bands, including SATANICIDE and the Barry Whiteboys. The Barry
Whiteboys are best remembered by their national debut as the opening act for
a Monster Truck show at Madison Square Garden in 1995.
Daytona's dreamy rock music was conceived when Chassie and Phil began
recording songs exhibiting alarming depth and importance (that is, songs
about themselves) on Phil's 4-track. With songs as thematically and
melodically succinct as they were self-involved, Chassie and Phil spoke
incessantly of these works and their grueling artistic process.
Enabler/No.6 Records took an immediate interest in these primitive yet
decidedly spiritual songs. The Enabler introduced Chassie and Phil to Ultra
Vivid Scene's Kurt Ralske, who went on to produce and engineer Daytona's
debut album at Zabriskie Point Studios.
Joining Daytona on keyboards is Mark Cline, of Athens, Georgia avant-pop
legends Love Tractor. On drums is Izzy Keenan, Phil's fellow ex-Barry
Whiteboy. On bass is Pemberton Roach, formerly of Thumper and currently a
member of SATANICIDE.
